Marjorie McDermott

Marjorie O’Brien McDermott, 80, died July 19, 2009, after a brief illness. She was born in New Haven, CT on October 4, 1928 to Nicholas and Viola O’Brien. She lived in Hamden for 46 years before moving to Branford 10 years ago. Marjorie is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 58 years George B. McDermott, Jr NHFD retired. and by her daughters Kelly (Mrs. Mark) Ryan of North Branford and Kathryn (Mrs. John ) Hynes of Madison. They were the light of her life. She leaves behind her grandchildren: Gleeson Ryan, Conor Hynes and Casey Hynes, who were her shining stars. Their accomplishments and time together were a great source of pride and joy to her. She was predeceased by her brother, Nicholas J. O’Brien, Jr. and leaves her sister-in-law and best friend, Arlene O’Brien of East Haven and nephews Nicholas, Daniel, and John O’Brien. Also in her heart are the Clark Street “Curb Stone” girls. ‘Fill we are all together again, I’ll miss you.” Margie shared her lifelong love of reading by volunteering in the New Haven Public School system and working at the New Haven Public Library until retiring to raise her children. After 16 years, she returned to work as the administrative assistant to the president at South Central Community College (Gateway) and then at Spring Glen Elementary School and the former Michael J. Whelan Middle School in Hamden. Margie always had an open ear for any child or teacher who needed one. Margie was a long time member and the founding president of the Hamden Figure Skating Association, a member of the AFCSME Local 130 where she served as treasurer for 8 years. She was also a proud member of the Yankee Division Auxiliary. Friends may call at Sisk Bros. Funeral Home 3105 Whitney Ave, Hamden on Tuesday, July 21 from 4 -7pm. . A celebration of Marjorie’s life and Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday, July22 at l0:00 0’clock at St. Mary’s RC Church 5 Hillhouse Ave, New Haven. Burial will be at All Saint’s Cemetery.
