Elizabth Stanton Colleran passed away peacefully on November 26, 2021 at Evergreen Woods Retirement Home in Branford, CT. She was predeceased by her father, Thomas Edward Stanton and her mother, Elizabeth Doerlier Stanton, brother Paul Stanton, and husband Patrick J. Colleran. She is survived by cousins Beverly Coholan Crowley of Billerica, MA, Sandra Coholan Lombardi of Tewksbury, MA and Ronald Coholan of Methuen, MA. She is also survived by the Colleran Family, including sisters-in-law Catherine, Margaret and Winifred, a brother-in-law John Colleran, eleven nieces and nephews and many grandnieces and nephews. She is further survived by her lifelong friend Florence Reisner and her daughter Kerry Reisner, and her close friends Karen Downing and Nicki Dakis. Elizabeth was born on April 9, 1928 in the New Haven Hospital. She graduated from Hillhouse High School and then went on to graduate from the College of New Rochelle located in New Rochelle, NY. She subsequently obtained a Master's Degree from Southern Connecticut State University and then her six year certification as a teacher. She taught English at Amity Regional Junior High School in New Haven for over 30 years until she retired. She was a very popular teacher and many of her students stayed in touch with her long after graduation. She has already set up the Elizabeth Stanton English Prize which is awarded annually to a student at that school. She and her husband, Patrick lived in Westville near the Yale Bowl for many years until his death. She subsequently moved to Evergreen Woods Retirement Home in Branford where she continued living until her death. She was a very religious member of the Catholic Faith and was active member of St. Aedan Parish, St. Thomas More Chapel, and St. John Bosco Parish in Branford. After Patrick's death, the close relationship with the Colleran Family continued especially during all the holidays and Aunt Betty was beloved by her nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews who enjoyed being with her at those and other times. She spent a great deal of time studying and traveling in France and had many friends there. Betty found great pleasure in reading and spent many hours enjoying good literature including many books related to her career teaching English. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John Bosco Parish (St. Mary's Church) at 731 Main St. in Branford on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Visitation will be Wednesday from 9 - 10 a.m. in Sisk Brothers Funeral Home 3105 Whitney Ave. Hamden. Burial in St. Lawrence Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the St. Thomas More Memorial Fund, 268 Park St. New Haven, CT 06511.
