Anthony (Gig) Butkus
Anthony E. Butkus of Hamden, peacefully passed away after a brief illness on Oct. 8th at Masonicare Health Center, Wallingford.
Born in Branford on March 10, 1926. Son of Antonio and Mary Butkus. Foster parents, William and Mae Bonney.
Husband of the late beloved, Lorriane (Strona) Butkus. Father of devoted children Donna Vescovi, Susan Frederico, Edward and Victoria (Frederico) Butkus. Grandfather of John Frederico, Eric, Kyle and Tara Butkus.
Pre-deceased by sister’s Mary Lempeck, Josephine Vetter, and Brother’s Joseph and Andrew. Brother-in-law’s Dominic and Frank Strona. Sister-in-laws Lucy DelVecchio and Theresa Dapkin.
Bother-in-law of Vivian Oneto, Marie Strona and Helen Strona.
Anthony joined the United States Navy Submarine Service, at 17 in1943. Saw active duty in the South Pacific, World War II. Plankowner on the USS Sterlet SS392.
Built his home with his own hands in Hamden. Worked for New Haven Carpenter and Cabinet for 10 years. Partner and master cabinetmaker, Summit Carpenter and Cabinet of Orange for 25 years. Semi-retired to Town of Hamden, Board of Education, master cabinetmaker for 18 years.
Built his summer home on the shore in Milford, which he enjoyed for 30 years with his family. In his workshop he made countless wooden treasures. Anthony had a great appreciation for nature and wildlife and was an avid saltwater fisherman and boater. He loved music and played the keyboard. A favorite pastime was gaming at the casinos.
The family is very grateful for the excellent and compassionate care he received at Masonic’s Ramage 2 and the ACHU. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in Anthony’s name to the Masonic Charity Foundation of Connecticut, Annual Appeal. Funeral from Sisk Brothers Funeral Home 3105 Whitney Ave. Hamden Friday at 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am in Church of the Ascension. Burial in Centerville Cemetery.
